Because the success of a catback exhaust system depends on various factors – like catalytic converter restrictions, engine power, etc. – there’s no easy way to calculate how much horsepower you stand to gain.
Considering cat-back exhausts replace more restrictions, they typically offer increased performance and noise compared to axle-back systems; however, they’re also more complicated to install…and more expensive.
Engines fitted with regulated 3-way catalytic converters are equipped with a computerized closed-loop feedback fuel injection system using one or more oxygen sensors (also known as Lambda Sonds or sensors).
Unwanted reactions result in the formation of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, which poison catalysts. Nickel or manganese is sometimes added to the washcoat to limit hydrogen-sulfide emissions.
